In July, Portugal's updated nationality laws took effect. These make a few changes to the rules regarding qualifying for citizenship, the documentation required and the process.
The residency period for naturalization has been reduced from 6 years to 5 years.
Children born in Portugal to foreigners who have been legally resident for at least two years are now automatically considered Portuguese, unless they expressly reject it.
Nationals holding passports from Portuguese speaking countries now no longer need to either prove they attended school for a qualifying period or pass a language test; it is assumed that they speak Portuguese and so are exempt from this normal requirement of naturalization.
For most EU nationals, there would be no real need to obtain a Portuguese passport in most cases since EU nationals throughout Europe enjoy the same rights to live and work. However, for UK citizens concerned about the Brexit process, who have been resident for over 5 years, a Portuguese passport could guarantee rights not just in Portugal, but across the EU.
